Animal Man #1

Just to start off, let me clarify that I have no previous knowledge of Animal Man, and I haven’t read any issues from the line before, so this seemed like the perfect opportunity for me to get aquainted with the whole Animal Man world and to give an unbiased opinion of the new issue of Animal Man #1 as a part of DC Comics’ New 52 relaunch. Being a DC Comics fan of the greatly known Batman and Wonder Woman titles, the unknown quantities of the new 52 relaunch had me the most curious. Let’s face it, it is a great opportunity to get to know characters you weren’t previously knowledgeable about.

First off, the artwork didn’t quite do it for me. I felt like I was looking at unfinished work, sorry.  So from the get-go, I wasn’t impressed. As far as the story line goes, it took me a while to get into it, but by the time Animal Man revealed his flesh-filled eyes, I was intrigued. As Buddy returns home and finds himself dreaming a quite frightening dream about his family, he then wakes up to find his daughter playing with decomposed animals outside. If that isn’t disturbing enough to keep readers fascinated, I don’t know what else would be.

As a newbie in the whole Animal Man scene, I felt that the first issue raises a lot more questions of who the heck the Animal Man is and what he does exactly. That could be a good thing, as it builds up a alluring plot for the upcoming issues, but I felt they could have done a little more explaining into what exactly was going on.

Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised and now eager to find out how the story line will progress. Definitely an issue to check out.
